How to surprise your birthday boy, again

Last year on Mitchell's birthday, I got him really good! I picked up an old, worn out, trashed skateboard deck and painted it really frilly. This was a deck that Milo Sports was going to through out, so they gave it to me. When he opened the present, he said it was the most beautiful deck he had ever seen. His friends and brother all looked very sad for Mitchell. On the back of the deck was a second package which I told him were the wheels. When he opened this package up, he found his new IPod. That was good, hard to beat but I got close this year.
Mitchell has wanted a cell phone for a few years now. We truly did not feel that he needed one. Patrick got one in 5th grade due to singing at the Cathedral downtown and after he missed the bus one night, I got him a cell phone. Mitchell bugs us constantly about getting a cell phone. So much so that we told him he would never get one. So, I told him that if he ended the year with straight A's I would get him one at the end of the year.
Fast forward to last Sunday, after church we went to IHOP for brunch. At 12:00, a phone in my purse rang. I answered it and handed it to Mitchell. On the other end was his best friend Skyler. Skyler said, "I am so happy to be the first person to call you on your new phone". It was great! The look on his face was priceless. Below are the photos of the event in progress.

Happy birthday Mitchell!

Hi Shaun!
Thanks for visiting my blog! I just love your ideas for gifting with the element of surprise!

As for the ottoman, my husband made a rectangular box in the size I wanted for the ottoman, then I placed a 3' foam on top, covered that with a thin layer of batting, then wrapped the fabric over all of the layers, flipped it upside down and stapled the fabric (and batten) to the bottom of the wood box. I bought fittings to attach the legs (which I also bought for ~$4 each) and then I tacked on the fringed trim with upholstery tacks. Yours sounds a bit different...might be some sewing involved...with that I'm absolutely NO help!! LOL!

Thanks for stopping by...your kids are adorable!
